Forever Forgetting What I Should Always Remember

With the world being the way that it is at the moment, I think it’s far too easy to think that the world is full of shitty people. If you take a moment to think about it, however, I think that the reverse is true.

Take our NHS, for example. Back in January 2021, there were over 120,000 doctors and over 300,000 nurses. To get into medical school, you generally have to get 3 A’s at college, which makes you a very intelligent person that could easily get a really well-paying job. Instead, these people take on 12 hours shifts at day and night, experiencing a lot of traumatic things for relatively little pay. That’s not a shock to new recruits and yet they keep on joining the ranks in their thousands. The story’s not so dissimilar for many of our other public services.

As of October 2022, there are approximately 180,000 charities registered in England and Wales, with almost 1 million trustees and almost 5.5 million volunteers (I’m not sure on the number of employees). Those charities, have an annual income of over £75m, with over a third of that coming from the donations of normal people.

If you have had the joy of reading The Happy Newspaper, you’ll see that there is such a steady stream of incredible people and groups doing incredible things. Scientists researching new treatments for patients, teachers delivering inclusion programmes, housing associations building affordable housing, young carers supporting their family members, environmental activists taking on large corporations, creatives providing relief from everyday stresses, therapists helping people to heal, friends gathering around a mate in need, essential workers keeping the country running… There’s really no shortage of good in this world.

Have you got any recent examples of someone doing good for you or for anyone else? Please share them in the comments below.
